It’s March Madness Baby!

It is that time it is officially march with the NCCA Tournament for the Men and Women right around the corner let’s see how I think SUU will do this year.

In the Mens bracket SUU won the regular season crown finishing 19-3 on the season and 12-2 in Big Sky Conference play. SUU will win the Mens bracket and get an easy win over North Colorado, a close win against Montana State and in a nail bitter a 2 point win over Eastern Washington in the final to become the 2021 Mens Big Sky Champions and make their first NCCA Tournament since 2001.

In the Womens bracket I have Idaho winning the championship. The Lady Thunderbirds team has been on and off this season I have SUU winning against Northern Colorado and then losing to the Number 1 seed Idaho State.

Framework for my sports column

The framework for my sports column is going to be about hockey which is a sport I truly love. The first issue I am going to write about is the Connor McDavid vs. Sidney Crosby feud that has been going on for a while among the NHL community. I will look into the stat lines for both players, overall on how they play the game of tradition, and achievements such as MVP honors, scoring titles, sportsmanship awards, and how much Stanley Cups each player has won.

Are E-sports really sports?

Today the sports world is evolving, and it is not what you think. It’s the online world it is E-sports and it begs the question are e-sports really sports? I say no, for me sports has to have a form of physical excursion if it is from football two 300 pound forces of nature running into each other at full speed or Zion Williamson rushing down the lane looking to poster and breaking the next poor basketball rim in sight or Michael Kopech who plays in the MLB throwing 101mph fastballs in high school. The physical aspect has to be there yes video games might have more mental aspects but still what are you doing to be like wow amazing feat, you are just sitting in a chair all day until your eyes get blood red from starring at a computer screen for ten hours a day and the worst injuries you could get from gaming is a wrist or hand injury granted overtime those can affect day to day life but for me it has to be some groundbreaking feat putting another person on a poster a running back trucking over a 320 pound defensive lineman, a golfer swinging a club at 206mph like Bryson Dechambeau. Not sorry it is just not enough evidence for me to consider it a sport.

Sports Columns

The sports column I read today was “CLICHES AREN’T EVERYTHING… …THEY’RE THE ONLY THING–IN THE WORLD OF SPORTS, AT LEAST, IN WHICH THERE’S A BROMIDE FOR ANY SITUATION.” by Steve Rushin. What I liked about Rushin’s column was how real he was with it descripting every moment in a sports game, to the clichés of sports such as lines like “they’ll eat your lunch” which can be used as motivation or trash talk in a sports game. Also this column describes a player/coaches everyday life down to the brutal honest truth.

Also other a column by sis boom bah humbug by Rick Riley is about the honest truth of the situation about cheerleading and how they usually they don’t impact the game in the article.

The last one from ESPN the Ewing Theory by Bill Simmons, and how it is an article that has different sports in it, and even to the lengths of pop culture, and the theory of how a team can be better without a hall of famer, franchise player.

Favorite Sports Rivalry

This one hits close to home its the Chicago Bears Vs. Green Bay Packers the oldest rivalry in the NFL . I think this is the best rivalry in all of sports also I love it because I’m a Chicago Bears fan and getting the opportunity to see my Bears win against the packers it sets the tone of the week that I can cherish the moment that the Bears came on top. Granted the packers have dominated the rivalry as of late but it doesn’t matter what the season records are when you face your rival its like a clean slate starting at 0-0.

Greatest sports moment I ever watched

Since the title of this blog is a golf blog lets go with the pepole that swing clubs and hit balls for a living. The greatest golf moment I ever saw I juts got done playing eighteen holes with my grandpa. We went back to his house to chill eat lunch and then wait for chaos a couple hours later with a family event happening at my grandparents house. We were watching the PGA tour, At the time John Rahm was in the lead and Dustin Johnson was on the last hole needing a birdie to tie. Johnson’s ball hit the green but faded about 30 feet from the pin with a hard left to turn the ball to make it in the hole and whelp DJ did it he did the hardest left putting stroke I have ever seen and tied it up so now it went to a playoff. Rahm Vs. Johnson both men made to the green with ease Rahm hitting a ridiculous putt that would make any golfer crap their pants even thinking about it. Rahm put in in from 66 feet out with a uphill slop that went to the left and then went to the right before it fell into the cup in that moment I was speechless.

Felton Spencer

Felton Spencer a 7’0 265 pound center who is known for his dominate rebounding and physical nature. Spencer played college basketball at his hometown university and a true blue blood college basketball program the Louisville Cardinals. As a senior at Louisville spencer averaged 14.9 points, 8.5 rebounds, and 2.0 blocker per game. In addition spencer is also Louisville all-time career field goal percentage leader shooting at 62.8 percent. Spencer was drafted sixth overall by the Minnesota Timberwolves in the 1990 NBA draft. Spencer was selected to the all-rookie team his first season in the league averaging 25.9 minutes per game, 7.1 points, 51.2 shooting percentage, and 7.9 rebounds per game, and ranked 7th in NBA offensive boards during his rookie season. Spencer would play two more season for the Timberwolves before being traded to the Utah Jazz in the 93-94′ season, and stayed with the Jazz for two more years before being accquired by the Orlando Magic, and played one game for the Magic before being traded to Golden State. Spencer bounced around to the Spurs and Knicks before retiring after the 01-02′ season.

Questions I would ask Felton Spencer

Why did you decide to say home for college and attend Louisville?

I would ask this question because to some pepole commiting to your hometown college is a huge deal.

What was it like playing among stars like John Stockton, and Karl Malone?

Because those are guys are legends, and were superstars back in the day

What advice would you give to young athletes that want to go pro?

To get the advice from a athlete that has lived through that experience already

What was your mindset on the night that you were drafted?

This mindset goes through the mind of very single athlete and a lot of pepole have different opinions

Playing back in the day what would you do different if you played in todays league?

because todays league is so different from back when Spencer played.

Super Bowl!!!

Its the grand daddy of them all its the Super Bowl. this years matchup has two of the high powered offenses in the NFL colliding together The Bucs Vs. The Chiefs. I think the Bucs will walk out victorious, and before you spit fire on me here is why. One reason is Tom Brady wanting to win a super bowl without Bill Belichick but another reason is the bucs defense has ran rough shot over everyone the past couple of weeks, and the team is peaking at the right time with weapons like Evans, Godwin, Miller, and Gronk also don’t forget Fournette. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers are my pick.

National Women In Sports Day

Today is National Women in Sports Day, and today I’m going to talk about the only ever female player in the NHL Manon Rheaume who played for the Tampa Bay Lightning in a exhibition game becoming the first female player in the NHL’s history, allowing two goals on nine shots. This is a huge feat for women’s sports because it showed a women coming into the best hockey league on the planet and playing with grown men that have more powerful shots then cars racing down the freeway. Manon Rheaume is a example of how females can impower sports and motivate other females to do the same.

Game Story Practice

BOISE, Idaho — The Southern Utah women’s basketball team entered the Big Sky Conference Championship tournament as the tenth-seed Monday evening and scored a huge 64-56 upset victory over seventh-seeded Montana Grizzlies.

Both teams played twice during the regular season splitting the series, with each team winning at home.

The victory for SUU was the first in the Big Sky Tournament since the 2013-2014 season.

“We learned a lot about ourselves when we beat Montana last week”, SUU Junior Guard Rebecca Cardenas said after the game ended. “ I think having that game so late in the season really gave us confidence that if we stuck to our game plan and played our game that we could come here to Boise and beat anybody.”

SUU led the game from beginning to end going on a 11-2 run to start the game and having the lead at the end of the first quarter 20-11.

The Grizzlies found momentum in the second quarter, but the Thunderbirds walked into halftime with the lead 33-23 at the break.

Halfway through the third quarter the Grizzlies clawed their way back into the game. However the Thunderbirds finished strong going into the fourth quarter and it was all Thunderbird basketball from that point on for the upset of the No.7 seeded Grizzlies.

Top performers for the Thunderbirds were Cardneas and Ashley Larsen, both finished the game with double-double performances.

Breanu Reid finished with 15 points, and a notable performance by Harley Hansen finishing with 10 points and a perfect 6-of-6 from the free throw stripe.

The Lady Thunderbirds advance to the next round of the Big Sky Tournament tomorrow at 5:30pm against No.2 seed Northern Colorado.
